We had a fantastic day of touring the Duoro Valley with Rui. He is knowledgeable and friendly, and ensures you have a pleasant and relaxing experience in the Valley. I requested to visit two specific wineries and Rui was able to make that happen no problem (and quite responsive via email).

We visited amidst some of the wildfires but Rui was nothing more than reassuring and informed about how we should navigate the situation. We had an amazing time with Rui! Rui is professional, knowledgeable and friendly. We enjoyed the tours/tasting of two wineries, lunch at one of the wineries and a boat tour. We had a wonderful time with Rui! My boyfriend and I spent the day with Rui who built a customized agenda where we were picked up in Porto, visited two wineries, had a lovely lunch, AND a river boat cruise. Rui was kind, knowledgeable, and laid back with great conversation which we very much enjoyed. He left us with PLENTY of recommendations for our next stop in Lisbon - we can’t wait to check them all out. We did a private tour with Rui as I do not like big group tours and prefer the flexibility of private tours. He picked us up on time at our hotel (early, in fact) and took us to two wineries (Quinta de Pacheca, where we had lunch and Quinta do Beijo). He also arranged for us to go on a boat tour from Piñhao. It was nice to tour and experience a more commercial winery vs the more intimate experience of a smaller winery. The property at Pacheca was beautiful and our lunch had a great view. The food was fantastic. We felt the wines at Beijo were better overall. However, I was a bit off put by some of the borderline rude comments the owner of Quinta do Beijo made during the tour, like telling his customers to “get the hell off his property” if we had no more questions or to “shut up and drink”. I get that this is his type of humor but at the same time he should be aware that his guests come from all over the world and his humor may not translate well by everyone who visits his winery.

Everything but the winery lunch (if you choose to do it at a winery) is included in the tour and organized by Rui. His Mercedes is clean and he did his best to manage the timing of our itinerary well. We were coming a bit late to the boat tour from lunch but we were able to hop on a boat that left 30 minutes later with no issue. I wish we had more opportunities to take photos of the beautiful views but I guess I could have conveyed that to him if that was my wish.

As a tour guide Rui is on the quiet side. He didn’t volunteer much information about the region and I guess I kind of expect tour guides to impart interesting tidbits about the place we are visiting rather than simply be a driver. I did have a stomach bug I was fighting all week including that day and so maybe it was just that he thought I needed some quiet. My husband asked some questions and he did answer them but I do wish the interaction was more proactive. Still, after getting to know him better at lunch you can tell Rui is a polite and kind person and executed our itinerary as expected.

We found Rui through Google in an effort to avoid to large group tours. Rui arranged our entire day, which included 2 tastings, a gorgeous lunch, and a boat tour. We didn’t have to worry about anything. Throughout the day, Rui was an ambassador for the history and culture of Douro Valley and Portugal. However, most of the time we felt like we were hanging out with a true friend. We had a wonderful time with Rui during our private tour of the Douro valley. He catered the trip to what we wanted. We went to 2 great quintas, did a Duoro River cruise and had a great lunch. Rui was wonderful and gave us great recommendations for Porto as well. I would recommend him to everyone. Thank you!
